The Man Behind the Seed Planter Mic
Hi, I’m David Monay Jr.
I’m a proud husband, heart dad, son, and brother. My roots are deeply planted here in the Coachella Valley, and I’m committed to helping this community grow and thrive. Today, I’d like to share a piece of my story and why I’ve started the Seed Planter Podcast.
My journey is deeply personal—it’s shaped my values, my voice, and the lens through which I view the world. As the child of immigrants who left their homeland in the late ’80s, I was raised with the understanding that adapting to new environments isn’t just a skill—it’s survival. My parents came from two very different worlds, but they left everything behind to pursue something better for their children.
My father, a determined and independent spirit, left behind a life of opportunity—even though both of his parents were educators with impressive degrees and a respected place in their community. He followed his own vision, even when others questioned it.
My mother, resilient and nurturing, came from a humble yet entrepreneurial family in Tecate, Baja California. Her family ran small businesses—a gas station with a mini-mart, a restaurant, and even a rodeo. As one of the oldest siblings, she naturally became a caregiver. Her strength and unconditional love taught me to fight hard for what I want—and to do it with passion or not at all.
They were the first seed planters in my life. And for that, I’m forever grateful.
I was seven when we moved from Mexicali to the Coachella Valley. I was in second grade. Spanish-speaking. Red-haired. Let’s just say, I stood out. I had to learn to defend myself early on. It was a tough time—but it taught me how to adapt, a lesson that would carry me through the rest of my life.
My grandmother—my first true love—encouraged me to be brave and expressive. That spirit still lives in me today. Whether it’s through words or art, I’ve always felt the need to express myself. I’ve learned over the years that expression is powerful—but timing, tone, and intention matter too.
In 2012, I earned my degree in graphic design from California State University, Fullerton. That milestone opened doors and helped me build lasting professional relationships. While I continue to work as a freelance designer, I also work for the Palm Springs Unified School District—a job that helps me support my family and stay connected to the community.
Coming from humble beginnings, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to try something new—to pursue a goal, pick up a trade, or start over. That’s why I started this podcast. It combines my love for language and creativity. It’s a platform to speak life into others, especially those who feel like the odds are stacked against them.
Because even if you’re an awkward, hyperactive, red-headed kid with undiagnosed ADHD, you can still be a seed planter. You can still grow. And you can still help others grow too.
Thank you to everyone who’s helped shape me into who I am. If you’re new here—welcome. Your support means the world to me and fuels this mission to leave the world better than I found it.
